Law Firm Retention
-
A lot of law firms spend thousands of dollars every year attracting new clients, while simultaneously neglecting the important art of retaining their existing clients. Equally important is neglecting the art of retaining productive employees.
Here are three suggestions for law firm managers to improve employee retentiom.
Food and Drink
Everyone needs energy to be productive. Provide you employees with free coffee, juice, soda, and water. Also provide them with an assortment of energy bars to grab between client meetings on days when they may be too busy to leave the office for lunch. If late nights are the norm, look to take-out services such as Waiters-on-Wheels to bring dinner to the office.
Public Transportation Passes
Getting to and from the office takes time away from work. If your office is located near a public transportation hub, contact your local public transportation agencies to find out what types of discounts they provide employers who encourage employees to take public transportation. In the San Francisco Bay Area, CalTrain offers employers tax credits for purchasing train passes for their employees.
Mentoring
For a new lawyer, the change from law school to law office is usually quite dramatic. The first day often ends with a realization that law school did not really teach them what they needed to know to practice law. In order to ease that transition, build firm loyalty, and create a productive employee, consider establishing a mentoring program where opportunities are built into each employees yearly plans to work closely with and receive feeback from more experience employees.
